Celebrate National Orthodontic Health Month!

October is important to our Smile Squad at Appalachian Orthodontics of Lynchburg because it is National Orthodontic Health Month! During October, the orthodontists educate the community about the important work they do to serve their patients. Our goal is to draw attention to the fact that everyone can benefit from an orthodontic evaluation.

When To See An Orthodontist

You are never too young or too old if your bite or smile needs correction. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that parents have their chilrden evaluated by the age of 7. During the growing years of 7 – 10, kids undergo a major growth spurt that goes hand in hand with the eruptive pattern of their teeth and development of jaws. Treating orthodontic issues early can help prevent the need for more involved and costly interventions in the future, such as oral surgeries.

If you never underwent orthodontic treatment when you were a child or teen, it’s not too late for you! 1 in 4 orthodontic patients is an adult. Signs You May Need Orthodontics

Be on the lookout for signs that can be found in children, teens and adults:

Early or late loss of baby teeth or missing permanent teeth
Thumb sucking or tongue thrust habit
Difficulty chewing or biting into food
Mouth breathing
Crowded teeth
Crossbite, overbite and protruding teeth
Inability to comfortably close lips
Speech problems
Teeth that don’t come together
Grinding or clenching of teeth
Clicking of jaw joints and TMJ problems
