ACCELERATED ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

Accelerated orthodontics is usually reserved for adult patients with a Class III malocclusion or a bite that is not easily fixed with traditional orthodontic treatment. Often during PAOO or periodontally-accelerated osteogenic orthodontics, a bone graft will be used to enhance the bone volume of the lower jaw. Corticotomies, or small surgical cuts around teeth or tooth segments stimulate osteogenesis or regrowth of bone. During this time of bone healing and regrowth, teeth can be moved at a much faster rate than through regular dense bone structure.

Orthodontic appliances are placed prior to the minimally invasive procedure and then during the healing process, the patient will come in frequently for wire adjustments and changes to move the teeth into the proper position. There is a 4-6 month window of time where the teeth will move rapidly before remineralization of the bone occurs. Accelerated movement through this window of time is considered a major benefit to patients who want to spend less time in orthodontic treatment.
