EARLY ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT
EARLY INTERCEPTIVE TREATMENT: Phase 1
In accordance with the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), Appalachian Orthodontics of Lynchburg recommends children visit an orthodontist by the age of 7. By 7 years of age, children have mixed dentition with newly erupting permanent teeth and several remaining baby teeth. This is an ideal time for Dr. Black to evaluate children and their need for early orthodontic treatment. Dr. Black can then identify any subtle abnormalities or malocclusion issues that may have an impact on permanent teeth erupting into their proper positions.
If necessary, the Dr. Black can intervene and create room in the upper arch for larger permanent teeth using a palatal expander. Through early intervention or Phase 1 treatment, Dr. Black can gently guide the development of the jaw and make room for permanent teeth to avoid unnecessary extractions. This opportunity gives your child the best possible outcome for successful orthodontic treatment.
While not all children are candidates for early interceptive treatment, some may benefit from creating space sooner, rather than after, all of the permanent teeth have erupted. The following are examples of some orthodontic issues that may be present when your child is 7 years of age.
Appalachian Orthodontics of Lynchburg is pleased to offer Phase 1, or early orthodontic treatment, using clear aligners such as Invisalign® or Spark. Clear aligners used for Phase 1 treatment is designed to target arch expansion and work with patients who have a mixture of permanent teeth and baby teeth.
