Navigating Emergency Orthodontic Care Between Appointments

While orthodontic issues typically require professional attention, there are instances where patients can address minor concerns at home or alleviate discomfort until their next appointment. The following are some tips on addressing orthodontic issues at home:

If a bracket becomes loose or breaks, try to keep it in place by applying orthodontic wax. This will prevent irritation to the surrounding tissues. If the bracket falls off, store it in a plastic bag, and take it with you to your next appointment with us. Please text us as soon as possible to let us know so Dr. Black and our Smile Squad can advise further and be prepared for your following visit.

Gently push protruding wires back into place using a clean pencil eraser or the back of a spoon. If this isn’t possible, cover the sharp end with orthodontic wax to prevent irritation. Contact us promptly for further assistance.

Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen can help alleviate mild discomfort. Please do not use NSAIDs as they could interfere with tooth movement. Rinsing with a saltwater solution may also provide relief. If the discomfort persists, contact our Smile Squad to discuss potential adjustments to your braces.

It’s not uncommon for food particles to get lodged in and around braces. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, dental floss, or an interdental brush to gently dislodge any trapped debris. If you encounter persistent difficulties, consult our orthodontic professionals for guidance.

If any appliance attached to your teeth becomes loose, please use wax as needed to keep comfortable and text us ASAP for further instructions; should any piece become completely loose out of your mouth, please keep it in a Ziplock bag and contact us and bring it along so that Dr. Black and our Smile Squad are prepared for your next visit.

Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution to soothe any irritation. Topical oral gels or orthodontic wax can be applied to alleviate friction between braces and soft tissues. If the issue persists, reach out to us for additional guidance.

If you experience difficulties with your aligners, such as improper fit or discomfort, contact our office promptly. Please move back tom the last aligner that fits perfectly and text us. Avoid attempting to force new aligners into place, as this may compromise the treatment outcome.

Regular oral hygiene practices are crucial during orthodontic treatment. Maintain diligent brushing and flossing habits to prevent issues such as cavities and gum disease. Attend scheduled appointments with your general dentist and your hygienist for cleaning and check-ups.

Orthodontic Issues Vs. True Orthodontic Emergencies

Though some orthodontic issues can be managed at home, there are certain situations that are true emergencies, requiring immediate medical attention. These situations include:

  • Major Trauma Or Injury: If there’s a significant injury to the teeth, face or mouth, it’s essential to go to the emergency room or call 911. This could involve a concussion or a broken jaw, requiring urgent care by a doctor.
  • Uncontrollable Bleeding: In cases of bleeding from the gums, mouth or face that cannot be managed, seeking medical attention at an emergency room or urgent care is crucial. This could indicate a serious cut or infection.
  • Severe Unmanageable Pain: If there’s intense, unmanageable pain in the mouth, prompt consultation with a medical professional is necessary. Unbearable pain should never be ignored, and immediate attention may be required.

Once you have been seen by a medical professional for any of these orthodontic emergencies, please schedule a follow-up appointment with our office. Dr. Black can reassess and adjust the orthodontic treatment plan as needed.
